AMERICA’S CUP JUBILEE REGATTA Round the Island Race - 21st August 2001
A Brief Report - From the spectator boat area off Bembridge Ledge on a perfect August day, it was possible to see a century of yachting’s most illustrious history sail past, sometimes almost close enough to shake hands with the crews. From a start line off Cowes the yachts began beating against a force 3 south-easterly, reaching the turning mark off Bembridge around noon. The first yachts to arrive were the modern ocean racers, followed by large classic yachts of several generations. Yacht after beautiful yacht kept passing by, as they turned to go round the back of the Isle of Wight. Finally the most majestic yachts of all time, including the three J-Class Yachts, the 23m yacht Cambria and several large schooners glided by almost effortlessly, but deceptively fast, as they towered over the spectator boats. The modern yacht Stealth was the first to reach the finishing line off Cowes.
