There are many reasons why re-powering an existing boat may be necessary or desirable.  To keep running costs down a change from petrol to diesel is often worthwhile.  To avoid the vulnerability to theft of an outboard, an inboard engine may be the answer.  Or it may be that the current engine is just worn out and needs replacement with a more modern unit.  Sometimes greater performance is required and again, this may result in a re-powering operation being considered.

I can assist with all the technical aspects of a re-powering project.  Firstly I can inspect the boat and assess the feasibility, providing a report for the owner indicating the costs and potential benefits.  Then a suitable power unit can be selected (1) and a propeller chosen.  Drawings will be produced for the new engine installation and sterngear arrangement.  But before the engine is ordered the space is carefully checked out at the boat using full size templates (2).

I can then arrange for the work to be carried out at a suitable boatyard.  When the engine arrives its installation will be supervised by regular visits to the yard.  The engine will be installed on specially designed engine mounts (3) with a drip tray underneath.  Then the sterngear will be specified to suit the type of boat and the keel arrangement (4).

All the ancillary components and engine sub-systems of cooling, exhaust, starting, power take-offs, sound-proofing and propeller will be carefully chosen and their installation designed to ensure that they are right for the boat (5).

In this excellent installation by Brancher Marine for a Hurley 22, the fuel filter, fuel shut off tap and cooling water seacock lever are all accessible at the front of the engine box (6).  But when the engine compartment door is shut, the installation is almost unobtrusive (7) and with no outboard motor to store, there is even some additional space in the aft locker for fenders and gear.

Finally, when the project is complete, motoring trials will be undertaken before the boat is handed back to the client (8).  Performance is assessed on a measured mile motoring trial and sound emission measurements are taken to ensure that the new installation complies with all current regulations.
