The  Volvo  Ocean  Race  Yachts  2001-2
Before the eight teams competing for the Volvo Ocean Race trophy left to race around the world in nine legs, the yachts were moored at Ocean Village in Southampton for public inspection.  At first the yachts looked small compared with some of the steel BT Global Challenge yachts that are still based in the same marina.  But, as you look at the Volvo Ocean 60s you see what really mean machines these are - just long thin stripped-down racing platforms, with tall carbon-fibre spars and a minimum of deck gear.

One has to admire the crews who will stay on these boats for legs of up to several weeks, racing flat out all the time, with the absolute minimum of comfort and exposed to everything the world’s weather can throw at them.  Almost the ultimate test of sailors, their gear and the yacht design itself.
