Herry Lee of Indonesia has invited me to publish details and sketches of "The Lifeguard" - his new invention for saving lives at sea, by improving the safety of yachts and boats.
The device, which is installed under each wing of a trimaran, or on each side of a monohull boat, consists of a canister containing a self-inflating airbag. It activates in a similar way to the modern inflating lifejackets or the airbag devices used to protect front seat car passengers from injury in accidents.
When, as a result of hull damage, the vessel is in the process of capsizing, or is flooded and in danger of sinking, the Lifeguard opens very quickly, releasing large buoyancy bags to stabilise the vessel and keep it afloat.
Herry Lee is seeking a sponsor to assist with his project to develop the Lifeguard, a product that he says could be "standard safety equipment for all kinds of yachts and boats in the future".
