Yacht Design at Camper & Nicholsons

In the early 1970s, before the days of desktop computers, I worked on the flat drawing boards in the yacht design office at Camper & Nicholsons, headed by distinguished yacht designer Raymond Wall, who now lives in Canada.

The design offices at Southampton were originally set up by the legendary yacht designer Charles E Nicholson, whose image watched over the yacht design office from a famous Beken photograph on the wall.  This 1974 cartoon of me (top left), is by yacht designer and artist Clive Dent (middle left), who is now Chief Designer at Pearson Yachts of Rhode Island, USA.

As viewed from the yacht design office, the 1967-built replica of “America” (top right) visited the Camper & Nicholsons yard in 1974 for repairs after losing her bowsprit in heavy weather off Ireland.

“Golden Delicious” (lower middle left), the prototype of the Nicholson 33 production three-quarter ton class yacht, won the Fastnet race on handicap in 1975.  Ron Holland designed the hull with detail design by the C & N team.

This beautiful yacht (middle right) was one of the successful one-off racing yachts, all called “Yeoman”, designed by the C & N office for the Aisher family.

“Brigante” (bottom left) was a 36ft C & N designed One Ton Cup racer with an aluminium alloy hull.

The photo on the lower right shows one of the many Nicholson 30s, production yachts that did well as Half-Ton Cup racers.
