SeaWORK 2003 Exhibition
Three days of glorious June weather, a wide range of interesting vessels to see, 267 stands exhibiting equipment and services, as well as an informative lecture programme all meant that the SeaWork 2003 show at the Port of Southampton was better than ever.

Vessels on show afloat (1) ranged from the ubiquitous RIBs to very specialised workboats, which had been built to meet the exacting clients’ requirements for highly specialised duties.

Looking at possible options for a new dive support boat for one of my clients took me first to the Halmatic WB15 (2), a new steel monohull with the benefit of a wide working deck - almost as large as those found on some catamarans, but without the expense of twin hulls.

Macduff ship design offer a wide range of steel vessels and although their 22m research vessel Aurora, which was on show, would be unsuitable for a dive support vessel, their little 13.6m catamaran (3) appears to be a very versatile and economical vessel.

The aluminium Wavetrain catamarans from Alnmaritec have always been impressive and with a growing number of fit-out options the 15.6m version (4) capable of 26 knots should be on the shortlist of anyone looking for a fast working boat offering a wide and stable platform.

South Boats have a growing reputation in workboat circles and their catamaran (5) “Second Opinion” is certainly a tough and purposeful vessel and ideal for the charter angling or diving club market.

Also at SeaWork 2003 were some excellent small monohulls fitted out for a wide range of uses.  The Cleopatra (6) from DS Marine of Poole appears to be a tough and neatly finished boat at a very reasonable price.
